GENERIC NAME: chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride and clidinium bromide

BRAND NAME: Librax

DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Librax combines the antianxiety action of librium (chlordiazepoxide) and the antispasmodic effects of clidinium. It also blocks the acid secretion of the gastrointestinal tract and inhibits blocking the action of nerves that are very active in certain diseases.

GENERIC AVAILABLE: yes

PREPARATIONS: Capsules: 5mg chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride and 2.5mg clidinium bromide.

STORAGE: Capsules should be stored at room temperature in a tightly close container.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Librax may be effective as therapy for peptic ulcer disease and irritable bowel syndrome . It also may be useful in the management of acute gastroenteritis .

DOSING: May be taken with or without food.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Librax should not be used in the presence of glaucoma or urinary retention (difficulty urinating) as seen in benign prostatic hypertrophy. It may add to the depression caused by alcohol or other nervous system depressants. Since Librax can reduce mental alertness, caution is advised when mental alertness is required.

PREGNANCY: Librax is not recommended for use in pregnant women as there may be an increased risk of congenital malformations of the fetus in the first trimester.

SIDE EFFECTS: Adverse reactions may include drowsiness, dizziness , and confusion. Nausea, constipation , and dry mouth may occur. Urinary hesitancy or retention are seen, particularly in the elderly. Skin eruptions and liver abnormalities are less common.
