MEDICAL DICTIONARY
Pulmonary hypertension: High blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries that convey blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs. Normally, the pressure in the pulmonary arteries is low compared to that in the aorta . Pulmonary hypertension can irrevocably damage the lungs and cause failure of the right ventricle.
Pulmonary hypertension is conventionally divided into primary and secondary types. Primary pulmonary hypertension has been idiopathic (of unknown origin) and occurs sporadically with no family history of the disorder and in a familial form. Secondary pulmonary hypertension can occur in association with congenital heart disease, pulmonary embolism , portal hypertension, collagen vascular disorders, sarcoidosis , and HIV infection .
"Pulmonary hypertension" is made up of "pulmonary" for lung, "hyper" for high, and "tension" for blood pressure. (In French, the word for blood pressure is "tension").
