Postpartum psychosis: An episode of psychosis usually beginning within 4 weeks of delivery. A woman with postpartum psychosis may lose touch with reality and have auditory hallucinations and delusions. Visual hallucinations are less common. Other symptoms may include insomnia , agitation, anger, and irrational guilt about somehow having done something wrong. Without treatment, women with postpartum psychosis may try to hurt themselves or those around them. Postpartum psychosis requires treatment, usually with medication .
