1,3-Butadiene: A chemical used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber. 1,3-Butadiene is a carcinogen (causes cancer).
In the year 2000 the US government upgraded 1,3-butadiene to the status of a "known human carcinogen" based on studies that provided evidence of a causal relationship between occupational exposure to 1,3-butadiene and excess mortality (deaths) from hematopoietic (blood and bone marrow) cancers.
