MEDICAL DICTIONARY

Diabetic skin disease: A skin disorder that is caused by diabetes or affected by diabetes.

Skin disorders are common in diabetes. Some of these disorders are conditions that anyone can have but to which people with diabetes are particularly prone, such as atherosclerotic skin changes, bacterial and fungal infections of the skin, and itching .

Other diabetic skin diseases are seen mainly or exclusively in people with diabetes as is the case, for example, with diabetic dermopathy , necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum (NLD), diabetic blisters (bullosis diabeticorum), and eruptive xanthomatosis .

In diabetes, most skin conditions can be prevented. And when they do occur, they can be successfully treated if detected early. But if not cared for properly, a minor skin condition can turn into a serious problem with serious consequences in a diabetic.

For other skin diseases to which people with diabetes are prone, see also: Digital Sclerosis; Disseminated granuloma annulare ; Acanthosis nigricans ; and Vitiligo .
